I System of a Down (conosciuti anche con l’acronimo SOAD) sono un gruppo musicale alternative metal statunitense, formatosi a Los Angeles nel 1994. Il gruppo è composto da Serj Tankian (voce, tastiera), Daron Malakian (voce, chitarra), Shavo Odadjian (basso) e John Dolmayan (batteria). Tutti e quattro i membri discendono dai superstiti del genocidio armeno del 1915, di cui parlano in molti brani.
Si fanno notare per le numerose influenze stilistiche, ma anche per l’impegno sociale e politico. Insieme al chitarrista Tom Morello guidano l’organizzazione non a scopo di lucro Axis of Justice,[2] che riunisce associazioni politiche, fan e musicisti di varia estrazione per difendere la giustizia sociale. Hanno venduto più di 20 milioni di dischi in tutto il mondo.
Dal 2006 al 2010 il gruppo non è più stato attivo e se ne è più volte vociferato lo scioglimento, ma è tornato sulle scene musicali a partire dall’estate 2011, partecipando a diversi tour mondiali.
